What would be different options for a back splash?

I'm having a hard time finding the cheapest way to put up a back splash along our counter. It's an old home and we've found many cracks along the plaster. The previous owners had some fake wood paneling to cover up...We'ixture of ve painted the room a Jalepeno green, with white trim. Our floors are mixture of light and dark oak laminate. all the cupboards are light oak, and the countertop is dark grey graphite. We're planning on selling the house in a few years so we want to put the bare minimum into this house.

Actually, you have a lot of inexpensive options, but most will take a major time contribution. Of course, you can head to your local tile store, home depot or lowes to find either an inexpensive stock tile or better yet, check out the over-stock palates in the back of the store. I, particularly enjoy the Expo (a Home Depot store) if you have one in your area. There you will find in the center section boxes of "custom or designer" tiles that someone ordered and did not like. They heavily discount these because they cannot send them back to the manufacturer. And, because they already got a deposit, plus at least a 25% "restocking" fee, they usually outlet them right around cost (which would be about what you pay for a stock tile).

You can also use inexpensive beadboard, also available at your local home improvement store. Don't be tempted to buy the big 4x8 sheets, however, you will have too much waste and they are unweilding to cut and piece. The 4x4 will suit your purposes and allow you to determine the best height for the backsplash. Since your home is old, it will cover the impefections, enable you to paint it with a coordinating color for the woods & trim you have and tie in the wall color. Just be certain to prime it well, use two coats of an eggshell or low-sheen latex for cleanability or seal it with a non-yellowing polyurethane. A nice trim piece to cap it off will give a finished, designer look. You can paint that white to match the other trim, or stain it to match the cupboards.

You can also invest some time doing something like a venetian plaster finish, say to a height about 6-8" above the countertop with a trim piece above and below (like along the counter) caulking both and heavily sealing the plaster treatment with polyurtethane so it can be cleaned easily.

Although this may be too comtemporary for your home, it may look chick with your graphite countertops, sheet metal. It is extremely inexpensive, can be cut to any size and riveted to the wall along the countertop. Once installed, it has the appearance of stanless steel, is very easy to keep clean and is timeless. If you have overhead cupboards, it can be installed in the entire section between the counter top to the upper cupboards. In areas where you don't want a raw edge, install a silver spray painted (or black) quarter round piece. Note, there sometimes is a film on sheet metal that you must clean off, ask at the Depot what to use when you purchase it.

Hope this helps give you a direction, it sounds like a fun project!
