Shark Sculpture

How do I use subtractive and additive on a shark clay sculpture?

I have to create a sculpture out of modeling clay for my art class. Do I have to wait for my sculpture to dry in order to use the subtrative method? How do I use the additive method for my shark?

The best answer here is going to depend a lot on what kind of clay you're using. Traditional "modeling clay" is made with non-drying linseed oil and never hardens. If this is what you're using, you're in luck because there is no waiting for it to dry - add or subtract at any time.

Subtractive means very simply "taking away" - removing clay by carving away what is not wanted. Additive is done by modeling a particular detail (a nose, ear, mug handle, etc) separately and adding it to the existing sculpture.

When using kiln-fired clay, you are best to wait til the clay is leather-hard - but not completely dry - before subtractive. For additive, make a "slip" of watery clay to use as a "glue" to adhere additive parts. This should be done before the clay is dry. Air-dry clay works much the same for these techniques.

Have fun with it!
