Elementary teachers - does your school do summer school?

If so, what is your schedule like? How long do you do summer school in the summer, and how much of the day? How much time do you devote to which subjects?

What materials do you need?

I am not an elementary teacher however, I have taught middle and high school and our district just about has the same rules. In our area, elementary and middle schools have summer school for one semester. School starts first week of June and is over the last week. The second semester (high school only) picks up the next day and goes until the last week of July.

A teacher will complete the summer school application and make any comments regarding any past summer school experience. In my case, we have options to select the school closest to where we live and who will be operating as a summer school facility. (not all schools do).

When we get assigned to a school and subject, we attend a first meeting and obtain schedules and go to our classrooms and prepare. Books are assigned when we get our student rolls. Those teachers who want to make extra money can do so by registering summer school students. It's great pay!

The day that students come to school, we are provided a box of supplies which include paper, pencils, pens, markers, notebooks, spirals, copy paper, and many other items that are useful for the classroom, students and teachers.

Because English is my first field, I teach English in high school during the summer. I enjoy it very much. High school students are a rainbow to work with after spending the whole year with middle school kids. They are much quieter and more serious about making up the failing grade that got them there. We are in school from 7:30-12:15 daily. And I still get a large portion of the afternoon to do nothing if I wish.

Finally, the pay is great. During the school year, I have a portion of my check withheld each month and it is accumulated. When the summer school pay starts- this is combined and I actually see 'more' money during the summer than regular school year. (they don't take out insurance, etc. during the summer)

I keep busy - I am still able to work on my schedule and make plans for the following school year. I devote as much time to my subjects as needed. By the time school starts. I have my syllabi ready for the next school year. I'm not one to procrastinate - so I enjoy my summer.
