Sharp AQUOS LC-32SB24U V.S. LG 32LG30? Do i need HD cable now? Also what does widescreen do? ?

They are both on sale right now for the same price in canada so im gonna get one. which one is better? pls help me!! ..
i am worried about them being widescreen? does that mean the picture will have that black stripe now if i dont get HD cable? i just want it to look normal 32 inches. im not a tech person and dont like widescreen dvds on my regular tv... can someone explain this in layman terms thanks!!

If the TVs have built in Digital Tuner, which I'm sure they do, you don't need HD cable unless you want premuim channels like HBO and Showtime. Some stations broadcast in HD over the air, like NBC, FOX ABC, CBS, DISC, ESPN, and TNT.

Black bands will depend on the source of what you are watching. For instance if you were to tune into any of the channels listed above in HD, chances are the picture will fill the entire screen. If you were to tune into a channel that does NOT broadcast in HD, Comedy Central for example, you will have black bands on the left and right of the picture, NOT top and bottom.

But all HDTV sets have an "aspect" button, pushing this button will fill the screen, but it will distort the picture as well. The image may appear stretched up and down or left to right depending on the "aspect" setting. (settings: full, wide, zoom wide, normal)

FYI, widescreen DVDs are made to be veiwed on TVs like you are considering, so the black bands will be minimized or gone depending of the aspect of the movie. If you were to watch a "fullscreen DVD" on your widescreen TV, you will have one of two things. You will either have a distorted image or you will have black bands on the left and right. Do realize, that when you have black bands at the top and bottom, you are getting the entire image.

As far as which TV is better, I don't think you would be dissappointed with either one. If you aren't a tech person them any added features wouldn't make a difference. Just go with the more affordable one.
