what kind of epoxy should i use to fix a broken vase?

it was my grandmothers vase, who is sadly deceased, and when it broke my mother cried as she threw it out, i took from the garbage, and seeing that the peices are quite large, decided to try to see if i could fix it. also, how would i apply the epoxy, how much would i apply and would i be waterproof?

I would use Superglue, personally, but if you want it to hold water, you should probably use a two-part epoxy specifically made for porcelain. You can get it at Lowes. Just run a line over one edge over each piece, from end to end, so you make a complete seal, press the pieces together, then run your finger down the outside edge of each seam to press excess back into the crack. Then wipe any remaining excess off with a paper towel. A little epoxy should come out each side, down the whole length of the crack, that way you'll be sure you're covering every millimeter of the break with epoxy.

Go slow, do one piece at a time, and let individual sections dry for a bit before trying to attach the next piece. I put a blown glass Christmas ornament back together like this- start from the bottom, and work your way up, slowly. And let it dry for a day or two before attempting to put water back into it. If it still leaks, mix up some more epoxy and smear it over all the cracks on the inside of the vase, working it into them with your fingers- it may manage to seal a leaky joint.

That's a nice thing you're doing for your mother, by the way.
